Garbage truck dumps load on Southport street after catching fire

A garbage truck has been forced to dump its load in the middle of a suburban Gold Coast street after it caught fire.

The blaze began as the truck was collecting rubbish along Woomera Crescent in Southport just before 11.00am on Tuesday.

Smoke poured from the back of the truck, forcing the driver to empty the load onto the street.

Two crews remain on scene working to douse the flames, with motorists being urged to avoid the area.

It’s not yet known exactly what sparked the fire.
