The life of a former Gold Coast police officer, who disappeared in the surf off northern NSW, will be celebrated today.

The Queensland Police Service is holding a memorial for Inspector Jay Notaro at the Sleeman Sports Complex in Brisbane.

Hundreds of the 45-year-old’s family, friends and colleagues are expected to gather to pay tribute to the much-loved police officer.

It comes more than 50 days after he went missing while surfing off Broken Head Beach near Byron Bay.

A major search was launched by authorities on March 25 after Notaro failed to show up for work and failed to answer any phone calls.

His vehicle was found in the beach car park, while his surfboard was discovered along the foreshore, about 500 metres north of where his vehicle was parked.

Police say his board was undamaged and the leg rope was still attached.

Notaro’s body has never been found, with his disappearance puzzling everyone who knew him.

Notaro held senior roles on the Gold Coast, including at the city’s water police and Coomera Police Station before transferring to Ipswich.
