The NRL Integrity Unit has asked South Sydney for a ‘please explain’ after star player Brandon Smith was pulled aside by Police after arriving on the Gold Coast.
Officers were waiting for Smith as the team landed at Coolangatta on Saturday afternoon.
They spoke to him for some time before he was allowed to rejoin his teammates.
“Queensland Police had cause to speak to a 29-year-old male at Coolangatta Airport,” police said in a statement.
“The male was later released without charge. Police have no further information to provide.”
There is no suggestion Police wanted to speak to him over any wrongdoing on the flight from Sydney.
South Sydney is remaining tight-lipped, with coach Wayne Bennett refusing to discuss the issue in his post-match press conference on Sunday.
“That’s an issue we’re not going to talk about,” Bennett said.
The NRL Integrity Unit is now liaising with the club.
