A new blockbuster movie featuring Aussie heartthrob Chris Hemsworth is set to begin filming on the Gold Coast.

Subversion has been described as Die Hard on a submarine, featuring a once-promising naval commander played by Hemsworth, who is blackmailed into piloting a dangerous submarine carrying illegal cargo across international waters.

What unfolds is a game of cat and mouse as the submarine tries to avoid authorities.

The film is being directed by Patrick Vollrath and co-stars Lily James, Michael Pena, and Aussie star David Wenham.

Production is expected to pump $63 million into the Queensland economy.

“We’re thrilled to welcome back another great blockbuster to be filmed in Queensland. It has a lot of water locations and that’s what we’re renowned for,” Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney said.

“We love the combination of our local crews, our local locations, working with some of Hollywood’s best.
