The man accused of the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has now formally been charged with aggravated murder and faces the death penalty.
Tyler Robinson, 22, has been in custody since his arrest last week following the shooting of Kirk during a public event at Utah Valley University.
Robinson is accused of shooting Kirk in the neck from a rooftop at the university.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray confirmed he would seek the death penalty.
“The murder of Charlie Kirk is an American tragedy,” Gray said
“I do not take this decision lightly and it is a decision I have made independently … based solely on the available evidence and the circumstances and nature of the crime.”
Prosecutors allege Robinson planned the shooting for more than a week and wrote a note saying, “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk and I’m going to take it.”
He’s also accused of urging his roommate to delete messages between them and not to talk to Police.
Robinson is also facing charges of felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and a violent offence committed in the presence of a child.
He remains in custody without bail and is expected to make his first court appearance later this week.
