A baby has been killed and his mother seriously injured in a horror crash on the M1.

A silver Jeep Cherokee was parked on the side of the northbound lanes of the motorway near Smith St at Gaven at around 2.50am on Sunday when it was hit from behind by a grey Toyota Hilux.

A one-month-old boy who was in the Jeep was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital.

However, he died a short time later.

A 24-year-old Ormeau Hills woman, who was driving the Jeep, was also taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.

A 51-year-old Loganlea man who was behind the wheel of the Toyota suffered minor injuries.

The accident forced the closure of most northbound lanes for several hours.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating with Police appealing for witnesses or anyone with relevant dash cam footage to contact them.
