Virgin Australia is making aviation history with the first Australian flight to allow pets on board to land on the Gold Coast.

A trial of the initiative kicks off today on flights between Melbourne, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast.

But the move comes with some strict rules for those wanting to fly with their furry friends.

The initiative is limited to small cats and dogs weighing less than 8kg, although cats won’t initially be allowed on Gold Coast flights.

The pets must be in approved soft-sided and leak-proof carriers with absorbent mats that can fit under the seat in front.

They won’t be allowed outside of their carrier during the flight.

The Pet Service will be limited to just four animals per flight, and will only be allocated to seats in rows 18 and 20.

It also doesn’t come cheap, with passengers to pay $149 extra for the privilege.

Virgin Australia CEO Dave Emerson says they’re thrilled to be able to offer the service.

“Our guests have been telling us for years how much they want to travel alongside their pets, and now they finally can. It’s a model that’s proven successful in the US and Europe and we’re thrilled to bring it to Australia,” Mr Emerson said.

“With almost 70 percent of households owning a pet, we expect the service to be embraced by pet lovers all around the country. Beyond convenience for pet owners, the service is also set to boost the pet-friendly travel sector, including hotels and tourism operators.

“Pets on flights is another example of Virgin Australia leading the way with new and improved service offerings and first-to-market experiences for our guests.

The trial will run until January, when the airline will consider whether to roll the initiative out across its domestic network..

Virgin Australia Group Medical Officer, Dr Kelly Bofkin says they have taken a rigourous approach to addressing any allergy or hygiene concerns.

“Ensuring the health and comfort of all guests has been central to the development of this service, and we’ve carefully reviewed customer feedback since our 2024 announcement to inform every decision,” Dr Bofkin said.

“We have looked to best medical evidence, worked with other airlines who currently carry pets and consulted with peak allergy bodies in developing our policies and procedures,” said Dr Bofkin.

“Our aircraft are fitted with advanced HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filtration systems, which capture more than 99 per cent of airborne particles, including pet dander.
