The Gold Coast has topped the list of the areas most impacted by severe weather in the entire country, according to new insurance data.
The figures are based on claims made between July 2022 and June 2025, a period when southeast Queensland had been hit with several severe storms, including the Christmas 2023 tornado, plus Tropical Cyclone Alfred earlier this year.
According to Suncorp, southeast Queensland made up nine of the top ten areas for severe weather claims, with seven of those on the Gold Coast.
Upper Coomera, Helensvale, Tamborine Mountain, and Coombabah topped the list for claims.
Redland Bay came in at number five, followed by Paradise Point, Runaway Bay, and Mudgeeraba.
The only non-Queensland area to make the top ten was just across the border in Banora Point, which also felt the effects of the same severe weather systems.
Despite the damage caused by these events, Suncorp says the number one claim was for food spoilage caused by prolonged power outages.
Authorities are using the data to urge Queenslanders to prepare now for the upcoming storm season.
“As we look ahead to the current severe weather season, we expect storms, cyclones, and heavy rainfall to again challenge communities across the state,” Queensland’s State Emergency Service Chief Officer, Dr Mark Armstrong, said.
That’s why preparation is vital – trim your trees, clean your gutters, secure loose items around your home, check your emergency kit, and develop an emergency plan that everyone in your household understands.”
