A man has been charged over a sickening coward-punch attack outside a popular Gold Coast shopping centre on New Years Day that’s left another man in intensive care.

A 44-year-old man was sitting at a bus stop outside Pacific Fair in Broadbeach Waters around 6am on January 1 when he was confronted by a man on a bicycle.

According to police, the man hopped off his bicycle and allegedly punched the victim to the head from behind, causing him to fall to the ground unconscious.

Whilst lying helpless, the offender then allegedly searched through the man’s pockets before fleeing the scene in a vehicle.

The victim suffered significant head injuries as a result of the attack and was rushed to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where he remains in intensive care.

Following investigations, police have since charged a 20-year-old Lismore man with one count each of grievous bodily harm and attempted robbery.

He’s due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today.
