A manhunt is underway following a violent home invasion in Mermaid Waters early this morning.

Four people wearing face-coverings forced their way into a unit on Bacardi Court around 1.30am.

Once inside, the gang allegedly attacked a 79-year-old male resident who was asleep on a lounge chair downstairs, hitting him a number of times to the head with a golf club.

Police say they then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and threatened the elderly man into handing over his wallet and keys to his 2018 Mercedes Benz.

The group then fled the scene in the Mercedes, leaving the man bloodied and bruised.

Police say the whole encounter took place while the man’s wife was asleep upstairs.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene a short time later and treated the man for a laceration to the back of the head and facial injuries, including a fractured eye socket.

He was then taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital, where he’s expected to undergo surgery today.

Following the robbery, the stolen Mercedes was driven into northern NSW where police say the occupants are alleged to have committed similar offending in the Tweed area.

The vehicle was then found abandoned at Bangalow, where it has since been seized for forensic examination.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward as they continue to hunt those responsible.
