Former SAS soldier Ben Roberts-Smith will front court today after being charged with five counts of the war crime of murder.

The Victoria Cross recipient was arrested in front of shocked passengers at Sydney Airport on Tuesday after flying in from Queensland with his family.

It follows a joint investigation between the Office of the Special Investigator and the AFP, which began in 2021.

The 47-year-old spent the night behind bars at Silverwater Correctional Complex ahead of his appearance in bail court this morning.

The charges allegedly relate to the former corporal’s time in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2012.

Each count carries a maximum penalty of life in jail.
