It is a rare feat for an artist to remain a permanent fixture in our collective musical consciousness for nearly three decades, yet Natalie Imbruglia manages it with a certain effortless grace. Most of us can still hum the opening chords of Torn with precision, but if you think the Australian-British icon is content living in a nineties time capsule, her latest announcement is about to set you straight.
Imbruglia has officially dropped the news on her upcoming studio album, Algorithm, slated for release on 4 September. Accompanied by the shimmering new lead single, Upside Down, the project signals a bold, independent era for an artist who has survived the highs of global superstardom and the lows of industry pressure, emerging with something remarkably authentic.
A New Era of Independence
What makes Algorithm particularly intriguing is the grit behind the glamour. Following the success of 2021’s Firebird, Natalie has taken the reins entirely, funding this project independently. In an era where “creative control” is often a buzzword, Imbruglia has walked the walk, co-writing and co-producing every single track on the record.
The collaborator list reads like a “who’s who” of modern sophisticated pop, featuring input from MyRiot (London Grammar), Fraser T Smith (Adele, Stormzy), and Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody. The result? A sound that leans into the elegant dancefloor sensibilities of artists like Robyn, sophisticated, slightly melancholic, but ultimately designed to make you move.
Natalie says, “On this record I chose to work with collaborators who also co-produce, so from start to finish we were all so invested in every song. I really hope that people get as much joy from listening to this record as we did making it. And that they dance their arses off. This was by far the most fun I’ve ever had making a record. It also happened to coincide with the most challenging time I’ve had with my mental health. This is the beauty of music and artistic expression. You can take something dark and turn it into light.”

Finding Light in the “Upside Down”
The first single ‘Upside Down’ opens with a flourish of bright synths and energetic percussion, with Natalie’s distinctive lilt floating above. As she reaches the chorus, it grows brighter – kaleidoscopic, shimmering – and we hear her relinquishing control and ultimately finding clarity in a song which came from a feeling of shame surrounding her mental health.
She explains, “The inability to control my emotions, wrestling with fight or flight mode, was awful, and I was reaching this critical point with it. In a way, the song is about how sheer willpower – trying to force your way out of something – doesn’t always work. You need tools, support. So that’s where the song was born from, that fight to maintain a semblance of what some might consider normality.”
It is this juxtaposition, dark, confessional themes paired with production that begs for a strobe light that makes the track feel so relevant. It’s an acknowledgement that life is often messy, but the music doesn’t have to be.
What to Expect from the Album
With eleven tracks including titles like Jesus On Mars and Who Dimmed The Lights, Algorithm feels like a deliberate departure from the safe bets of the past. It is an album born from empowerment and creative fulfilment. As Natalie puts it, she wants listeners to “dance their arses off” while finding the same joy in the music that she found during its creation.
