The music world is processing a profound shock following news that American singer-songwriter and internet personality Oliver Tree has died at the age of 32. The artist was involved in a catastrophic mid-air helicopter collision in Brazil on Sunday morning local time, an accident that claimed the lives of six people.

The tragedy occurs just months before Tree was scheduled to touch down for his largest Australian headline tour to date, leaving fans and the global entertainment community devastated.

A Horrifying Collision Over Rio de Janeiro

According to reports from CNN Brazil, the incident occurred in the sky above Recreio dos Bandeirantes, a coastal suburb located in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro. Two helicopters collided in mid-air under circumstances that remain under investigation.

Local authorities indicated that one aircraft was carrying five individuals, while the second helicopter contained only the pilot.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after one of the damaged choppers crashed directly into the parking lot of a nearby car dealership. The impact ignited a intense fire among several parked electric vehicles, which local fire crews managed to extinguish.

Tributes Pour in for a Unique Creative Force

Oliver Tree, born Oliver Tree Nickell, built a global following by pairing infectious indie-pop and electronic beats with an unforgettable visual identity. Instantly recognisable by his signature bowl haircut, oversized retro clothing, and an eccentric, internet-troll persona, he consistently blurred the lines between genuine pop star and performance artist.

Only a day prior to the crash, Tree had shared a series of upbeat highlights from his Brazilian tour with his 2.5 million Instagram followers. That final post has now become a digital memorial, flooded with expressions of disbelief from fans and high-profile peers alike.

An Unfulfilled Return to Australia

The tragedy cuts short a major career milestone. Tree was in the middle of a global tour supporting his fourth studio album, Love You Madly Hate You Badly, which was released in April. The tour commenced on 30 May, with his most recent live performance taking place in São Paulo on 6 June.

Australian audiences had developed a particularly strong bond with the California-born artist. He was booked to return to our shores this October for the Australian leg of the tour, marking his first local appearances since 2023. The highly anticipated run of dates included iconic venues such as Sydney’s Enmore Theatre and Melbourne’s The Forum.

Tree first made a massive impact on the Australian landscape with his 2021 track Life Goes On. He backed that success up in 2022 with the ubiquitous smash Miss You, a collaboration with Robin Schulz that peaked at number four on the ARIA singles chart and achieved double-platinum status.
