We all know in the story of Cinderella who the hero is, and how her stepsisters were the ultimate mean girls. But what if we had it all wrong? Netflix has just dropped the first teaser trailer for Steps, an upcoming animated fantasy-comedy that reimagines the classic fairy tale, and it looks like a brilliant twist on the story we thought we knew.
Arriving globally on November 20, Steps tells the tale from the perspective of Lilith (voiced by Ali Wong), one of the so-called “evil” stepsisters. Tired of living in Cinderella’s shadow, Lilith and her sister Margot (Stephanie Hsu) decide to steal the Fairy Godmother’s wand and hijack the Royal Ball.
Before they realise the scale of their mistake, things go spectacularly off the rails. They accidentally hand the kingdom over to a tyrannical new villain named Priscilla (Nikki Glaser).
A New Kind of Happily Ever After
To fix the mess, Lilith has to team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried). Forget glass slippers and midnight curfews, this unlikely duo finds themselves dodging biker trolls, outrunning sword-wielding henchmen, and venturing into the terrifying Screaming Woods to save their home.
The voice cast is stacked. Alongside Wong, Hsu, and Seyfried, the film features Bette Midler as a chaotic Fairy Godmother, Daniel Radcliffe as a quirky Prince, and Young Mazino as Gef (who the trailer cheekily dubs a “really hot troll”). Produced by Amy Poehler, the film promises high-speed carriage chases and a fresh take on sisterhood.
If the teaser trailer is anything to go by, Steps is gearing up to be a hilarious, action-packed ride that proves there are two sides to every story. Happily ever after is about to get a major rewrite.
