The 2026 World Cup has barely cooled down, and the digital football world is already making its next major move. If you spent the last month watching Kylian Mbappe tear up defences on the global stage, you should probably get used to seeing his face. EA Sports has officially named the Real Madrid forward as the cover athlete for the Ultimate Edition of EA FC 27.

The Story So Far: Why Mbappe?

The confirmation from EA Sports arrives less than a week after Mbappe’s French national team finished in fourth place at the 2026 tournament. For anyone paying attention, his selection is a direct result of sheer statistical dominance. Mbappe earned his second consecutive Golden Boot as the tournament’s leading scorer, finding the back of the net 10 times in just eight appearances. That effort also crowned him as France’s all-time leading scorer at the World Cup, boasting 22 goals across his three campaigns.

But EA Sports does not base its marketing solely on international tournaments. At the club level, Mbappe had a phenomenal 2025-26 season for Real Madrid, accumulating 43 goals and six assists across 47 matches.

This announcement marks the end of a four-year hiatus for the forward in the gaming space. He previously fronted the series during the FIFA 2122, and 23 days. Returning for EA FC 27 makes this his fourth appearance, tying him with Brazilian legend Ronaldinho for the most features on the franchise’s cover, though both still trail behind Wayne Rooney, who enjoyed an incredible seven-year run from 2005 to 2011.

Under the Hood: Mechanics and Expectations

While the cover star is locked in, the question remains regarding what the actual game will deliver. EA FC operates on a rigid annual cycle. What the franchise consistently does well is the sheer spectacle of the sport. The licensing, stadium atmospheres, and broadcast-tier presentation remain completely unmatched in the sports gaming market. We can expect further refinements to their animation engine, which usually translates to more realistic player collisions and smoother transitions when sprinting down the wing.

The Competition: Who is EA FC for?

If you have been playing the free-to-play eFootball but find yourself frustrated by the lack of official team licenses and premium presentation, this game will provide exactly what you are missing. It remains the definitive arcade-simulation hybrid for football fans and is my dedicated “game between games” meaning when I’m not playing the latest shooter or rpg for review, EA FC is my most played series of any year. Its also the game I throw on at the end of the day to chill out or reset after a full day at work.

EA FC 27 is, without a doubt, one of the most highly anticipated sports titles of the year. Putting the world’s most talked-about player on the cover only fuels that momentum. While EA Sports has not yet confirmed the exact release date, the franchise traditionally launches in late September. You can expect the game to be available across the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC platforms.
