The Gold Coast has scored another major sporting coup with the city to host six matches in next year’s Women’s Asian Cup, including a vital match for the Matildas.
The draw for the 2026 event was held on Tuesday night with the Gold Coast to welcome Korean Republic, Iran and Philippines for the group stages.
The action will kick off here on March 2 when Korea Republic and Iran do battle at Robina Stadium.
That will be followed by a double header on March 5 when Philippines take on Korea Republic before the Tillies take on Iran.
The final group match on the Gold Coast will take place on March 8 between Iran and Philippines.
But the action won’t stop there, with the Gold Coast to also host two play-off matches on March 19.
These games will feature teams defeated in the quarter finals as they battle to secure a spot in the 2027 FIFA World Cup.
Tourism Minister Andrew Powell says they are proud that Queensland will play a key role in next year’s tournament.
“Events of this calibre are a great opportunity to showcase the beauty of our glittering Gold Coast – we want people to come for the matches and stay for everything else we have to offer,” Mr Powell said.
“A key part of Destination 2045 is building out a year-round events calendar, making Queensland the events capital of Australia.
“We will continue attracting world-class events for locals and visitors as we make the most of the green and gold runway and we look forward to watching the action play out at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2026.”
The event is expected to provide a $12.5 million dollar boost to the Queensland economy.
Mayor Tom Tate says it will once again allow the city to shine on the world stage.
“It doesn’t get any bigger than this as Asia’s best women’s footballers descend on the Gold Coast,’’ Mayor Tate said.
Tickets for the event went on sale earlier this month.
