Police are investigating the discovery of a man’s body by the side of the M1 near Byron Bay.

Emergency services were called to the motorway near Billinudgel around 7.15pm on Sunday after at least three cars had crashed into an unoccupied motorcycle.

A member of the public then located the body of the male, believed to be the rider, nearby.

A crime scene has been established with officers from the NSW Crash Investigation Unit probing the incident.

The body is yet to be formally identified.

Two drivers were taken to Byron Bay Hospital for mandatory testing, while a third was taken to Tweed Valley Hospital for testing.

A report is being prepared for the Coroner.
