Schoolies celebrations on the Gold Coast are likely to look a little different this year, with safety concerns in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Alfred forcing organisers to rejig plans.
More than seven months on from Alfred, the beach at Surfers Paradise is yet to be restored to its former glory.
The damage had already forced the cancellation of this year’s Pacific Airshow, with plans now underway to ensure Schoolies celebrations can continue safely.
While beach activities are still planned for the week, organisers will shift infrastructure, including the main stage, off the sand.
That is expected to be placed on the Esplanade, which is currently a pedestrian-only zone as part of a trial
“City is supportive of the proposed approach for the Surfers Paradise Beach Hub, noting the Department of Public Housing and Public Works decision to keep all event infrastructure off the sand. We will continue to work closely with the department,” Council said in a statement.
