An elderly couple has suffered life-threatening burns in a horror fire at a retirement community in Kingscliff.

A massive blaze tore through a demountable home on Mary Street around 7.30am.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry has told myGC the fire was extensive.

“When our firefighters arrived, the demountable home was well alight and starting to threaten to spread to a joining property,” Superintendent Dewberry says.

“Firefighters were able to cut that off and it took about an hour to get the fire extinguished.”

A man in his 80s has been flown to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital n a critical condition, while a woman also aged in her 80s has been taken to Tweed Hospital in a serious condition.

Fire investigators are probing where and how the blaze started, including looking into several gas cylinders that have been found in and around the property.
