Firefighters have worked late into the night battling a large and intense bushfire sparked by a fatal light plane crash on the northern Gold Coast.

The fire erupted in thick grassland after the aircraft came crashing down shortly after taking off from the Heck Airfield at Jacobs Well around 6am on Tuesday.

At the height of the blaze there were over 20 fire crews battling the flames, which were continuing to burn in difficult terrain.

Water bombers were also called in to assist and extinguish the blaze from the sky, with fire crews eventually managing to put the flames out and leave the scene by 10pm.

A Queensland Fire Department spokesperson told Hot Tomato crews will return to the scene this morning where they will launch drones to assess the damage.

A smoke warning remains in place for Jacobs Well and surrounding areas, with residents urged to keep their windows and doors closed.
