Former Gold Coast Titans coach Justin Holbrook will return to a head coaching role after being appointed to lead the embattled Newcastle Knights.

Holbrook coached the Titans from 2020 and led the side to their last finals appearance in 2021.

But he was controversially dumped midway through the 2023 season to make way for Des Hasler’s arrival the following season.

Holbrook wasn’t out of the game for long, being picked up as an assistant at the Sydney Roosters.

After Newcastle decided to part ways with Adam O’Brien after a dismal season that saw the Knights claim the wooden spoon, club bosses have chosen Holbrook to turn their fortunes around.

“Following a thorough selection process, Justin was unanimously chosen as the best candidate to lead the Club into a new era,” the club said in a statement.

“We congratulate Justin on his appointment and look forward to his commencement as Knights Head Coach once his current commitments are fulfilled.”
