A fire has destroyed four cars and damaged another at a busy Gold Coast car park is not being treated as suspicious.

A BMW burst into flames at Sanctuary Cove around 1pm on Sunday afternoon before passersby alerted emergency services.

The blaze quickly spread to three other vehicles that were parked nearby.

The fire was eventually brought under control by around 1.30pm.

Acting Chief Superintendent Peter Miles has told the ABC, the fire appears to have started in the engine bay of the BMW.

“It had been parked up there for a little while, so whether there was a fuel issue with the heat of the vehicle as it drove there, and it just took a little bit of time to combust and start.

“But certainly, it had the potential to go very bad when you’ve got vehicles and fuel tanks, so the firies did a pretty good job.

“We’re still rounding off that investigation, but at this stage it doesn’t look suspicious.”
