The countdown to this year’s GC500 is on, with the mammoth job of transforming the streets of Surfers Paradise and Main Beach into a Supercars street circuit set to get underway.

With 38 days to go, crews will start installing 6km of concrete barriers and fences from today along the circuit as anticipation builds for the big event.

Day works will take place this week between 7am and 6pm along the Gold Coast Highway, Surfers Paradise Boulevard, and Macintosh Island Park, which will see some partial road closures.

Night works will take place between 7pm and 5am, which will see full road closures of the southbound lanes of the highway with diversions in place.

“Track build is really day one of the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500. From Monday, the buzz will start to grow and continue until race weekend,” GC500 Event Manager Matthew Ramsden said.

“For the next six weeks, the Surfers Paradise precinct will take on a whole new character. With over 6km of concrete barriers going in, it’s going to be an ever-changing landscape.”

Local residents and motorists are being urged to stay up-to-date with the construction schedule and prepare for some delays over the next six weeks.

“Building the world’s toughest streetcar circuit takes time, and I encourage Gold Coasters to show some patience as work gets underway through Main Beach and Paradise Waters,” Acting Mayor Mark Hammel said.

More than 200,000 motor racing fans will descend on the Gold Coast for this year’s GC500, which last year injected more than $58 million into the city’s economy.

Tickets are selling fast, while corporate areas are almost at capacity already.

“We have almost sold out the corporate facilities, and grandstand tickets are getting very close to being sold out as well,” Ramsden said.

It comes as event organisers unveil the entertainment lineup for the event which is included in ticket prices.
