Gold Coast City Council will meet today for a full council session, with disaster preparedness taking centre stage ahead of what experts warn could be a challenging summer.
City leaders are set to hear from the region’s disaster management boss, who has warned we could face a higher risk of extreme weather in coming months, including heatwaves, above-average rainfall, and potentially more intense cyclones.
Also on today’s agenda is a progress report on the city’s ongoing beach restoration works following the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Alfred.
The report shows promising results, revealing that 95 per cent of restoration efforts are now complete.
While much of the coastline has reopened, some northern beaches remain partially restricted due to safety concerns and ongoing works.
However, it’s been revealed new timber stairs are set to be installed before the summer holidays, restoring full public access and improving safety for beachgoers.
Officials say the progress so far highlights the city’s commitment to protecting its world-famous beaches ahead of what could be a challenging Summer.
