Police have busted four motorbike riders driving at excessive speeds as part of a road safety campaign in the Gold Coast hinterland.
The group was travelling together along Tamborine Mountain Road at Tamborine around 12.45pm last Tuesday, when they were allegedly caught travelling at 146km/h in an 80km/h zone.
All four of the riders, including a 42-year-old Robina man, 37-year-old Mermaid Waters man, 38-year-old Southport man, and 19-year-old Runaway Bay man, were issued with $1919 fines for speeding.
The Robina man was also charged with driving without a licence, with police alleging the man has never held a licence authorising him to ride a motorcycle.
While the other three men copped automatic six-month licence suspensions on top of their fines.
Acting Inspector Geoff Douglas said the behaviour detected on the day was extremely dangerous and placed all road users at risk.
“Police will not tolerate this type of behaviour and our officers are out on these roads to prevent tragedies before they occur,” Acting Inspector Douglas said.
Police have responded to two motorcycle-related fatalities on Tamborine Mountain in the past three months, including a fatal crash on the same stretch of road on 29 December.
Acting Inspector Douglas said the recent enforcement action sends a clear message to riders.
“These roads are popular with motorcyclists, but riders need to take responsibility for their actions and ride to the conditions,” he said.
“Speeding at this level not only puts the rider at risk but also endangers other motorists and the broader community.”
