A Logan man who posted pro-Islamic State videos on social media has learned his fate.

The 43-year-old was found guilty by a jury in the Brisbane District Court of six counts of advocating terrorism, after urging followers online to supply weapons and join jihad.

He also pleaded guilty to dealing in proceeds of crime after sending money to someone who travelled to fight in Syria.

The man was yesterday jailed for four years, with a non-parole period of three.

According to police, the man once tried to flee Australia by cutting off a GPS tracker and booking a one-way flight to Oman.

He was arrested in 2021 after being deported from Saudi Arabia and has remained in custody since June 2022.

Counter-terrorism authorities say the conviction highlights their commitment to stopping individuals who incite violence and protecting the Australian community from extremist threats.

“Joint counter-terrorism teams across the country continue to identify and charge individuals who advocate for others to commit terrorism offences,” AFP Assistant Commissioner Stephen Nutt said.

“The AFP’s number one priority will always be to keep Australians safe from those who seek to do them harm and there is no place in civil society for people who incite others to engage in violence.”
