LATEST @ 12.15 PM | There’s been a tragic end to the search for a man who vanished while swimming in the Nerang River.

Members of the public raised the alarm just after 7am on Thursday after seeing the man disappear under water near the Chevron Island bridge and fail to resurface.

Police confirmed divers sadly located his body around 11am following a mammoth search involving the rescue helicopter and water police.

“Police will prepare a report for the Coroner in relation to the death of a man at Surfers Paradise,” Gold Coast police said in a statement.

“Officers were called after the man was observed swimming in the Nerang River, before he went under the water and did not resurface.

“A large-scale search was conducted involving police and multiple other emergency services.

“The man was discovered deceased in the water by police divers around 11am”.

At this stage, the man’s death is being treated as non-suspicious.

EARLIER @ 8.00 AM | A desperate search is right now underway for a man feared missing in waters near Chevron Island.

Police say several witnesses spotted the man swimming in the canal just after 7am on Thursday before he went under the water and failed to resurface.

It’s understood the man had been seen struggling in the water near the Chevron Island Bridge before he vanished.

A search is now underway involving police and multiple other emergency services.

“At this time, the man has not been located and searches remain ongoing,” A Queensland Police spokesperson said.
