A massive search operation is continuing this morning after a tourist went missing off a Gold Coast beach.

Emergency crews were called to Main Beach around 6.30pm on Tuesday following reports a male tourist was struggling in the water.

Police say witnesses attempted to assist the 20-year-old man but lost sight of him in the ocean.

It sparked a major multi-agency water, air and land search involving Water Police, PolAir, SSUV Beach Rhinos, and foot patrols.

The search was suspended around 8.30pm last night before resuming at first light this morning.

Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the missing swimmer is urged to contact police.
