A man is fighting for life in hospital after an alleged coward punch attack in Southport.
Two males were reportedly having a conversation outside a licensed premises on the corner of Scarborough St and Railway Pde around 11.30pm on Saturday.
Police say, without warning, a 62-year-old male was allegedly struck in the face, before falling and hitting his head on the pavement.
Paramedics treated the man on scene before rushing him to hospital in a life-threatening condition.
“Unfortunately, he’s undergoing some significant struggles to survive the injury,” Acting Superintendent Brett Jackson told the ABC.
“We understand that family are by his side at the moment and may have to make some difficult decisions into the future.”
A 32-year-old Coombabah man has been charged with grievous bodily harm and is expected to front Southport Magistrates Court today.
Police say they are still investigating the lead-up to the alleged assault and whether the pair knew each other.
“The circumstances of their prior relationship or prior engagement will form part of the investigation,” Acting Chief Supt Jackson said.
“But our sincere condolences to the family of the 62-year-old male involved in this.
“It’s tragic circumstances, and it’s ruined multiple lives this one incident.”
