A pedestrian has died after being struck on the M1 in the Tweed Shire, forcing the road to be closed.
Emergency services were called to the motorway at Mooball following reports of a crash.
Officers were told that the man had been struck by several vehicles in the southbound lanes of the motorway.
The man died at the scene.
A crime scene has been established as Police investigate the circumstances of the accident.
The southbound lanes of the M1 remain closed as at 12.30pm.
Light vehicles are being diverted via Cudgera Creek Rd, Pottsville Rd, Tweed Coast Rd and Wooyung Rd.
Heavy vehicles up to 26 metres are able to use Tweed Valley Way via Murwillumbah to rejoin the M1.
Heavy vehicles, including B-doubles over 26m are being forced to park on the side of the motorway.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area and delay non-essential travel.
