NRL great and media star Matty Johns has made a surprise leap into club ownership, reportedly buying a minority stake in the Gold Coast Titans.

Newscorp reports the move will be officially announced by the club on Monday, ushering in what could be a new era for the embattled franchise.

The deal follows a turbulent year for the Titans, who finished 16th this season and parted ways with head coach Des Hasler.

The club’s ownership also underwent a shake-up in July when Rebecca Frizelle became the sole owner, following co-owner Darryl Kelly’s exit.

Johns and his wife Trish, who are good friends with the Frizelles, apparently held quiet talks for several weeks before agreeing to terms.

His ownership stake is set to take effect in the New Year, with fans hoping the Knight’s legends involvement will help deliver the Gold Coast its long-awaited first premiership.
