A spate of garbage truck fires on the Gold Coast has forced council to issue a plea to households.
There have been seven incidents this month alone where fires have broken out in the back of garbage trucks.
The blazes have forced the truck drivers to dump their garbage loads, leading to a lengthy cleanup.
It’s believed the number one cause of the fires is batteries being disposed of in household waste, with people urged not to throw them out with the rest of their garbage.
When crushed, the batteries can spark, explode and start dangerous fires.
Batteries can be disposed of for free at Recycle Street facilities at council waste depots as well as selected hardware stores and supermarkets
