LATEST @ 5.00 PM | A lengthy siege on the Gold Coast has finally come to an end.

A 46-year-old man, who was allegedly armed with an axe and gas cylinder, barricaded himself inside a unit along Railway Street in Mudgeeraba around 8.15am on Wednesday.

It sparked a massive police operation as tactical officers attempted to encourage the man to come out.

After close to eight-hours of negotiations, he finally surrendered without incident just after 4.15pm.

The man was arrested and taken to hospital where he remains under police guard.

No charges have been laid.

An armed man entered a home along Railway Street around 8.15am on Wednesday and barricaded himself inside.

Police don’t believe anyone else is inside the property.

Authorities are negotiating with the 46-year-old, who is refusing to surrender.

Neighbouring homes have been evacuated, with police urging members of the public to steer clear.

“At approximately 8.15am police were called to a Railway St address following a report that an armed man had entered the property,” Queensland Police said in a statement.

“A 46-year-old male has barricaded himself inside. Police do not believe anyone else is in the home.

“Police are currently engaging with the man and the public are asked to avoid the area.”
