Records have tumbled as parts of the Gold Coast swelter through their hottest October day ever.

The mercury at the Gold Coast Seaway hit 37.6 degrees just after 2.30pm on Monday.

That eclipses the previous October recorded at the Seaway of 36.8 degrees back in 2004.

However, the old Southport Ridgeway monitoring station did record a temperature of 39.4 degrees way back in 1958.

Coolangatta has also experienced its hottest October day ever, with the temperature reaching 38.3 degrees at 3.16pm

That’s well above the previous record of 35.6 degrees recorded in 2004.

The sweltering temps are thanks to strong northwesterly winds, which have seen gusts of up to 56 km/h at the Seaway.

That has kept firefighters on edge, with a number of small blazes breaking out, including one at Tallai, which has since been put out.

While multiple crews have been called to a blaze that broke out off Old Coach Rd at Burleigh Heads around 2.15pm.

Air quality has also deteriorated across the city, thanks to smoke from fires in other parts of the state, with the air rated as poor.

The heat and strong winds have also seen almost 2,000 homes and businesses lose power.

The majority of those are in Mermaid Waters, where 1514 customers are currently offline.

There are also outages in Luscombe, Miami, Ormeau, Robina, and Stapylton.
