A heavily pregnant woman has been injured after her car was struck by one of two vehicles allegedly racing on the M1.
A black Mitsubishi Lancer and a silver Holden Commodore were travelling south on the M1 around 11.40pm on Friday when the Mitsubishi hit the back of a black Hyundai i20.
Both cars lost control and hit a side rail before coming to a stop, blocking both southbound lanes of the motorway.
A 25-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Hyundai was trapped following the crash.
“Unfortunately, her vehicle was in the wrong place and the wrong time and was rear-ended,” Acting Superintendent Michelle Piket told the ABC.
“She was required to be cut free from the vehicle and was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital for some treatment for herself and monitoring of the baby.”
The woman has since given birth and has been transferred to hospital in Brisbane with her baby for specialist treatment.
The 18-year-old male driver of the Mitsubishi was also transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital with minor injuries.
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating with Police appealing for witnesses.
“The vehicle that was involved in the racing with the other vehicle was located by NSW Police across the border, but we are seeking any assistance from anyone who has some dashcam footage of the incident.”
