A cool change has arrived on the Gold Coast, bringing with it a much-needed reprieve from yesterday’s hot and sticky conditions.

Records were smashed right across the city as the mercury soared, with Coolangatta and the Gold Coast Seaway both experiencing the hottest October day ever at 38C.

The dry, humid conditions had firefighters on alert for much of the day, and for good reason, with multiple blazes breaking out.

A massive fire erupted on North Stradbroke Island around 4pm, with crews working to keep it under control until around 1.30am this morning before leaving it in the hands of rangers.

Over 10 crews also spent more than six hours battling a large bushfire along Old Coach Road in Reedy Creek.

The entire South East was placed under a 24-hour total fire ban, which lifted at midnight as the cool change swept through with showers.

The Bureau of Meteorology says we can expect a soggy day, with up to 70 millimetres of rain forecast for the region.

It’s also expected to be a lot more bearable temperature wise, with a maximum of 22C forecast for today, while for the rest of the week temperatures will remain in the 20s.

Air quality has also improved after all of the smoke from blazes across the state yesterday saw the rating of air across the city plunge to poor.
