The RSPCA has launched an investigation after up to 10 large dogs were spotted on a boat anchored on the Gold Coast.

A concerned local raised the alarm earlier this week after spotting the German Shepherds on board a vessel at The Spit in Main Beach.

It’s understood authorities have been aware of the issue for months, but have been unable to approach the boat due to the “aggressive and protective behaviour” of the dogs.

“GCWA officers became aware of the issue in February, when one of the dogs was rescued after falling into the water,” The Gold Coast Waterway Authority (GCWA) said said in a statement.

“GCWA does not have jurisdiction over animal welfare matters and therefore is unable to comment on the number of dogs on board or the appropriateness of their living conditions.”

“We understand that the police have also been made aware of this situation and are assisting RSPCA with this matter.”

RSPCA Queensland has confirmed it is investigating.
