A pet dachshund has been caught up in a wild stolen car joyride across the Gold Coast.

The 12-year-old named Billy was sitting in his owner’s Mercedes Benz outside a business in Worongary around 4pm on Wednesday when a thief jumped into the vehicle and proceeded to lead police on a seven-hour long chase right across the city.

The vehicle was tracked down to Palm Beach, where it collided with a black Dodge Ram, being driven by the 48-year-old owner, on Melaleuca Street around 5.40pm.

Despite the damage, the driver managed to get up to Nerang around 6.50pm where he eventually abandoned the dog at a shop centre, allowing members of the public to grab it take it to a vet to be safely reunited with its owner.

The driver’s escapades finally came to an end just after 11pm when police deployed tyre spikes, bringing the damaged vehicle to a stop on the Gold Coast Highway in Palm Beach, right near the local police station.

The boy surrendered by lying in the middle of the road before he was taken into custody.

The 17-year-old boy from Tugun has now been charged with two counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and enter premises.
