Two people have been arrested after Australia Day celebrations on Wave Break Island turned violent.

Police were called to the popular Aussie Day gathering spot just after 1pm on Monday following reports of a disturbance.

A male adult was issued an infringement notice for public nuisance, while a juvenile was processed under the Youth Justice Act.

A Queensland Police spokesperson confirmed investigations into the disturbance were ongoing, with police appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Despite the incident, police said they were pleased with the overall behaviour of Gold Coasters across the city, in particular those who attended an anti-immigration march in Surfers Paradise.

“The QPS acknowledges the overall peaceful behaviour of protesters at the Gold Coast,” a Police spokesperson said.

It’s estimated around 1,500 people attended the march which started at MacIntosh Island at midday and preceded to the Esplanade.
