A major Gold Coast road will be shut down for the next two weekends, causing headaches for motorists.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads will begin fixing the road surface on the Nerang River Bridge (Panitz Bridge), which will require Nerang Connection Rd to be shut.

The first shutdown will take place from 8pm Friday (May 23) until 5am on Monday (May 26).

The closure will also be in place next weekend.

Motorists trying to get in and out of Nerang will be forced to go via the M1 instead.

Warning signs will be in place and traffic controllers will be on hand to direct vehicles, but motorists are being warned of delays and are being urged to allow extra time.

Pedestrian access to the bridge will remain open.
