UPDATE | A whale that became entangled in shark nets on the Gold Coast has now been freed.

The sub-adult humpback whale was spotted by beachgoers off Currumbin early this morning.

Local John Gordon was among those who alerted authorities before paddling out to the whale.

He said the whale did not look in a great way.

“I suspect it’s been caught through the night because it’s not frantic, it’s almost running out of gas,” Mr Gordon told Seven.

Rescue crews from Sea World and the Department of Fisheries raced to the scene.

The whale was freed from the nets just after 8.30am.
