Multiple fire crews are battling a large bushfire burning on the Gold Coast, with a smoke warning in place for nearby residents.
The blaze started off Wongawallan Drive in Wongawallan around midday on Friday but quickly spread, with more than two dozen crews currently tasked to the scene.
The Queensland Fire Department issued a smoke warning just before 1pm for those in the vicinity of the fire.
“Thick smoke is affecting Wongawallan and surrounding areas,” the warning states.
“Fire crews are currently on scene.
“This fire is not under control. Protect yourself from the impacts of smoke.”
The Guanaba Rural Fire Brigade is among those who have been sent to the scene. In a post on Facebook, the group urged locals to remain vigilant.
“This afternoon, Guanaba Rural Fire Brigade crews have responded to a fire call in Wongawallan, assisting the local brigade and other responding crews,” the post read.
“Our members are currently working alongside local crews to help bring the incident under control and support firefighting operations.
“With conditions capable of changing quickly, we ask people in the area to remain aware of their surroundings, keep clear of emergency vehicles and crews, and follow any official warnings or advice that may be issued.
“Incidents like this are another reminder of the importance of brigades working together. When additional resources are needed, Rural Fire crews from across the area can be called upon to support neighbouring communities.
“Thank you to all crews and volunteers currently on the ground.”
