Plans to redevelop the beloved Rainbow Bay Surf Life Saving Club have sparked strong backlash from locals, who say the proposal threatens the area’s character and heritage.

As part of the Gold Coast City Council’s draft master plan for the Snapper Rocks to Rainbow Bay foreshore, released in late 2024, a “long-term renewal” of the surf club is on the table. Other proposals include a more pedestrian-friendly Snapper Rocks Road, more shade and seating along the foreshore, and a new Oceanway linking Apex Park to Point Danger.

But for many long-time residents, it’s the club’s future that has struck a nerve.

“It’s a heritage building — leave it alone,” one local says. “Why can’t anything stay the same?”
