Former NRL star Trent Merrin has been charged after allegedly stealing $140,000 worth of cryptocurrency.
The 36-year-old was arrested after detectives from the State Crime Command’s Cybercrime Squad executed a search warrant at his Barrack Point home on Tuesday morning.
Detectives launched an investigation back in November 2024 after receiving reports $140,000 worth of cryptocurrency had been stolen from an account belonging to a 29-year-old man.
During a search of the property, officers seized several electronic devices which will be forensically examined.
Merrin was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he has since been charged with dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception.
“Police will allege in court that the man accessed the 29-year-old man’s account and transferred $140,000 worth of cryptocurrency,” NSW police said.
The former Rugby League star was granted conditional bail to face Port Kembla Local Court on December 3.
