A major operation is underway in Ipswich after an oversized truck carrying a wind turbine crashed into a bridge.

It’s resulted in the turbine becoming wedged under the Mount Crosby overpass, blocking westbound lanes of the Warrego Highway.

The westbound lanes of the Warrego Highway at North Tivoli and Mount Crosby Bridge are now closed, with police warning it’s expected to remain that way for an “extended period of time”.

It’s understood authorities will try to use heavy tow trucks in a bid to pull out the trapped turbine.

In the meantime, police are urging motorists to avoid the area with lengthy delays expected.
