New data has revealed Queensland electricity crews are facing a worrying rise in threats and near-misses from humans and animals alike.

In the past year alone, Gold Coast Energex crews recorded eight dog-related incidents, seven threats from people, and five encounters with other animals across the city.

Statewide, Energex crews experienced nearly 300 incidents in the last 12 months, with 138 recorded in South East Queensland.

“One of the biggest hazards we are facing in the field has nothing to do with electricity at all – it’s actually our customers,” Metering contracts manager Sarah Bradford said.

“The type of abuse and threatening behaviour being reported really does pose an additional risk to our crews that we don’t need.”

Bradford said the abuse has serious consequences, both physically and mentally.

“Our people just want to do a good job and get home safely to their friends and family, but abuse, threats and violence from customers can have lasting effects and potentially impact their return to work.”

In the past year, 81 incidents of threatening behaviour from customers were reported, and in some cases, crews required a police escort to attend properties safely.

But Ms Bradford said aggressive animals remain a constant hazard for Energex workers.

Across Queensland, there were 148 dog-related incidents and 60 involving other animals in the past year.

Bradford urged pet owners to secure dogs and livestock, saying even small or seemingly friendly animals can pose serious risks.

“While you may not see your pet as a threat, experience tells us that any dog can pose a risk, regardless of size or temperament,” she said.

“We also know that electric fences and owners holding dogs by the lead, collar or in their arms do not provide adequate protection for our people.

“We’re asking customers to ensure their pets and livestock are locked up and completely separated from worksites to provide a safe environment for our crews and meter readers”.
