Police have seized 13 vehicles and charged eight people following a major crackdown on hoons across the South East.

Officers launched an investigation after receiving reports of hooning activity on the Gateway Bridge during New Years Eve.

Around 11.50pm, several vehicles allegedly blocked northbound lanes of the Gateway Motorway at Murarrie and performed burnouts.

Police say it’s further alleged several people let off fireworks during the incident.

“Multiple police crews responded, however the alleged drivers of the unlawful gathering fled the scene prior to police arrival,” Queensland Police said.

Following investigations into the incident, police carried out multiple search warrants on properties across the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Logan and Sunshine Coast.

In total, 13 vehicles, including a black Ford utility, and black, blue, white, yellow, and silver Ford Falcons were seized.

The vehicle seizures also include three alleged stolen vehicles which were located during a search warrant at a Logan Reserve Road address in Waterford West.

A total of eight males, aged between 16 and 52, have now been charged with over 40 offences.

Detective Acting Inspector Sean Webster said police will continue to investigate and take strong action against those involved in hooning behaviour.

“Police will not tolerate driving dangerous acts of this nature,” he said.

“Those who engage in hooning risk serious consequences, including fines, vehicle impoundment, and potential imprisonment.

“In addition to these penalties, police have the authority to impound, immobilise, or confiscate vehicles involved in hooning”.

Investigations remain ongoing.
