The Gold Coast Suns have booked a place in September for the first time ever, sealing a finals berth with a dominant performance that capped off a breakthrough season.

The Suns demolished Essendon 153-58 in front a sea of red and gold at Carrara’s People First Stadium on Wednesday night, the 95-point victory also marking the biggest winning margin in the club’s history.

Proud coach Damien Hardwick said the milestone was a reward for the playing group’s hard work and progress.

“It hasn’t been an easy year by any stretch, but I think the growth in our group has been enormous,” he said.

Hardwick believes the Suns have more to give as they head into their maiden finals campaign.

“I think they’re capable of doing some really good things,” he said.

“They’ve earned the right to play in September and I think that’s the exciting thing for our football club.”

While the Suns know bigger challenges lie ahead, Hardwick said the achievement should not be underestimated.

“It’s a great day for our football club,” he said.

“We’ve still got a lot of work to do, but I think our fans will be incredibly proud of their side tonight.”

The win was also the Sun’s 15th for the season, four more than any other year, capping off a history-making night on the Gold Coast.
