The Matildas have been given one almighty task to securing their first Olympic medal at the upcoming Paris Games.

The Olympics draw has been announced this morning and it’s a tough one for Tony Gustavsson’s side.

The Matildas will play in Group B, competing against football powerhouses the USA, Germany and one of the final African qualifiers in either Zambia or Morocco.

The US is ranked fourth in the latest world rankings, while Germany is fifth.

Vice-Captain Emily Van Egmond admits it will be a challenge, but one they’re up for as they aim to go one better than their efforts in Tokyo where the Aussies narrowly missed out on a podium finish.

“We’ve seen women’s football is only growing and the Olympics is a super competitive tournament,” Egmond told Nine.

“For us, it’s all about focusing on us and the challenge that lies ahead.

“You saw how hard it was for all the european teams to qualify, with England, Sweden missing out in particualr.

“For us, it’s just focusing on ourselves, we’re used to these kinds of things… We did well in Tokyo and now in Paris we have a new challenge and one that we will be excited for”.
