The body of a missing swimmer has been found following a massive search on the New South Wales Far North Coast.

Emergency services were called to Chinderah around 1pm on Thursday after reports a swimmer was having difficulty in the water near Barneys Point Bridge.

Crews from both New South Wales and Queensland, including  the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, launched a wide-scale search for the swimmer.

New South Wales Police have confirmed this morning a man’s body was found in waters nearby about 7pm.

“While the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be the missing swimmer – a man aged in his 20s,” NSW Police said in a statement.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
